Chapter 4
Move to Abergavenny
The move to Abergavenny came out of the blue. My father had been visiting a television and HIFI shop in the town whilst he was a Sales Representative for Grundig and they offered him a position as Manager. In a similar vein to much of my past, I do not know exactly why he wanted to change his job and uproot the entire family but I have a suspicion that it was because he would not need to travel and would be home during periods when my mother became depressed.

It was of course a shock because I would be leaving all my friends and have to start fresh in a new school. Worse than that there was no grammar school so I would be entering King Henry VIII Comprehensive and it had a terrible reputation. I don't think I visited Abergavenny before we moved but that may be just one of the many memories that I have obliterated due to my love of alcohol. I do not even remember the day we moved and I first saw our new home. Abergavenny is a beautiful market town nesting in a lush green valley and surrounded by farms so it was a lot nicer than Pwll but it is inland so that would be the end of my sea fishing. The house was simple and small but relatively new and was in the middle of a zig zagged terrace of red brick flat roofed homes constructed on an estate by a local builder. Quite why the cheapest houses on the estate should be in a prime position with a big grassy area leading down the the main road and an unobstructed view of the Blorenge mountain does seem strange. There were three bedrooms, and I had the smallest but with a view of farmland and mountains and not another house in sight, I was more than happy. Mair did not move with us and I do not know for certain but I believe that this was due to severe friction between her and Anne but again it is another situation that was never discussed with me and I never asked.
