Welcome to Mr Jones'  Blog

A horribly disreputable life in the merchant navy, travelling the world, working on oil rigs, repairing and building ships, behaving badly, divorce, behaving even more badly, marrying an amazing lady, child late in life (very), happiness and contentment. I was not a good person but I hope I am now. My past is not pretty and nor am I but it would give me great pleasure if you could find time to follow my new life, but hope you are not shocked by my past. Did a leopard change its spots of did it just get old and they faded?

So here is a summary of what this Blog is all about. It has suddenly struck me that having a younger wife and a six year old son whilst sixty seven years old and starting to feel it, does present a number of problems for the present and even more so for the future. I cannot keep on charging around the world fixing ships and pretending that my body does not hurt or that I don't have to drag myself out of bed in the mornings. My son also needs me home, so with very little in the way of savings I have resigned as Technical Manager for a shipping company and instead will write a book about my unusual life whilst renovating a run down Victorian detached house and attempting to make it as near to energy independent as possible. Mr Jones has gone green and potentially lost his marbles because not only do I not have much money, I also intend to do all the work myself. This is just the start of my freedom from the email and being employed rat race and so far I am loving it. I am sure there will be ups and downs and it would be great if you could follow my pursuit of family happiness, energy independence and long term security for my wife and son.

I have a section 'Mr Jones goes Green' that will detail my attempts to install solar power and insulate the house to close to new newbuild standard. This sounds easy but I plan to carry out all the work myself and to date the only assistance I have had is supporting two solar panels as I lifted them onto a roof. Later I may well start a separate website for this aspect of my new life.
